The definitive first-timer's Japan, without the guesswork.
Japan is a country that rewards planning, and few first-time itineraries balance modern and traditional Japan as evenly as this ten-night route. You'll open with three unhurried nights in Tokyo, retreat to a hot-spring ryokan under Mount Fuji, spend three days living inside Kyoto's temple districts, and close with the food-obsessed streets of Osaka before flying home from Kansai. It is designed for travellers who want to see headline Japan without doing a whistle-stop tour — every city gets long enough to feel lived-in rather than checked off.
This itinerary is perfect for first-time visitors, couples on a milestone trip, honeymooners planning a soft-adventure honeymoon, and families with children old enough to enjoy long train days. It works equally well as a slow-luxury holiday and as a culture-heavy heritage trip. It is not built for backpackers on the shoestring end or for travellers who want beach downtime — Japan is a moving, walking, tasting country, and the route reflects that.
The route was chosen for a reason. Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto → Osaka is the classic Golden Route, but the version most agencies sell rushes Tokyo in two nights and skips Hakone entirely. We keep three nights in Tokyo because the city genuinely needs them — one for Shibuya and Shinjuku, one for old Tokyo and Asakusa, one for design districts, Ginza and Roppongi. We add Hakone because a night in a proper ryokan, with a private open-air onsen and a kaiseki dinner served in-room, is the single most memorable experience most travellers have in Japan. Kyoto earns three nights so you can see Fushimi Inari before the crowds arrive, spend an afternoon in Arashiyama, and still have time for tea in Gion. Osaka closes the trip because it is thirty minutes from Kansai Airport and it is the best food city in the country — the last dinner of the trip belongs in Dotonbori.
The pace is intentional. You will move between cities on the Shinkansen — never on a coach — and each transfer day is short by design. You get late-morning check-outs, private airport-style transfers when you want them, and full afternoons free of scheduled activity. Mornings are anchored on one big sight; afternoons are yours; evenings mix guided experiences with quiet dinners. Nothing is done at 6 a.m. except Fushimi Inari, and even that is optional. Expect to walk 8–12 km on active days; sensible shoes matter more than any packing tip.
The luxury level is unapologetically premium. You will stay in four hotels that all sit in the top tier of their category — Park Hyatt Tokyo for its skyline views and Lost in Translation legacy, Gora Kadan for a ryokan experience that Aman graduates rate as their favourite Japanese stay, The Thousand Kyoto for its minimalist rooms two minutes from Kyoto Station, and The St. Regis Osaka for its Midosuji-facing suites. This is a five-star trip that keeps a boutique feel. If you would like to travel at a slightly lower price point, the specialist can swap in equivalent four-star properties without changing the route.
For honeymooners, the trip has been quietly designed around your table. The ryokan night in Hakone is the emotional heart — kaiseki dinner in-room, a private open-air bath, and a lakeside walk with Fuji framing your morning coffee. Kyoto adds a private geisha evening in Gion as an optional add-on, and Osaka finishes with a rooftop farewell. Room categories at all four properties can be upgraded to suites with private lounge access on request.
For families, the pacing works surprisingly well. Children love the Shinkansen, love the vending machines, love the arcade floors of Shibuya and love Nara's deer park. The optional Disneyland and Universal Studios add-ons slot into either Tokyo or Osaka without disrupting the route. Hotels are chosen for family rooms and interconnecting options; ryokan-night dietary needs (including Jain, vegetarian and no-onion-no-garlic) are pre-briefed with the chef.
Food is one of the reasons to book Japan and this route treats it that way. You will eat sushi in Tsukiji, a kaiseki dinner in Hakone, matcha and wagashi in a Gion tea house, okonomiyaki and takoyaki in Dotonbori, and — for those who choose the Michelin add-on — a sushi omakase from a chef trained under a legend. Vegetarian, Jain and vegan travellers are looked after: Kyoto's shojin-ryori (Buddhist temple cuisine) is one of the most refined vegetarian traditions in the world, and every hotel has vegetarian breakfast options confirmed at the reservation stage.
Culture runs through every day. Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji in Kyoto, Todai-ji in Nara, the Sagano bamboo grove in Arashiyama — you will not leave without a real feel for how Japan holds its past. We add small, private moments too: a morning walk with a Kyoto local, an optional sumo training viewing, and a private guide in Tokyo for anyone who wants context beyond the guidebook version.
Shopping is deliberately unhurried. Ginza's flagship stores, the Nakamise arcade in Asakusa, Nishiki Market in Kyoto for knives and tea, and Shinsaibashi in Osaka for streetwear all sit inside your free afternoons. If you are hunting for something specific — a bespoke suit, a Grand Seiko, a handmade knife with your name engraved — flag it early and the specialist will build in an appointment.
Seasonally, Japan is a year-round destination. Late March to early April is cherry-blossom season and books six months out; late November is autumn foliage in Kyoto and is arguably the more beautiful of the two peaks. Summer is festival season (Gion Matsuri in July, fireworks in August) and hot; winter brings clear Fuji views, illuminations in Tokyo and, for skiers, an easy add-on to Hakuba or Niseko. The route works in every month; the wardrobe changes, but the trip does not.
Photographically, this is one of the most photogenic routes on the planet. Expect standout frames at the Shibuya Scramble at blue hour, Fuji at sunrise from Lake Ashi, the tori-gate tunnel at Fushimi Inari before 7 a.m., the bamboo grove in Arashiyama on a misty morning, Gion's lantern-lit lanes after dinner, and the neon canyon of Dotonbori. Ask the specialist for a shot-list PDF if photography is the reason you are going — we produce one on request.
Every element on the page is fully customisable. Add nights, swap cities, upgrade hotels, add Hakuba for skiing or Okinawa for a beach coda, or downgrade to comfort-tier hotels to bring the price to a lower band. This is the specialist's most-booked Japan itinerary — it is a starting point, not a fixed product.
Ten moments you will actually remember.
Every highlight is a real, scheduled part of the itinerary — not a marketing bullet.
Shibuya at blue hour
The world's busiest crossing from a private viewpoint, then izakaya dinners in Nonbei Yokocho.
Meiji Shrine at dawn
A quiet forest inside Tokyo, walked with a local guide before the first tourist bus arrives.
Mount Fuji from Lake Ashi
A morning cruise with Fuji framing the water — arguably the trip's single best photograph.
Ryokan night in Hakone
Kaiseki dinner served in your room and a private open-air onsen carved into the hillside.
Shinkansen to Kyoto
Tokyo to Kyoto in 2h 15m aboard the bullet train — Fuji visible from the right-hand window.
Fushimi Inari before sunrise
10,000 vermilion tori gates walked in silence before the day-trippers arrive at 8 a.m.
Arashiyama bamboo grove
A misty walk through the grove, a Sagano river ride and lunch at a temple garden restaurant.
Gion tea houses at night
Lantern-lit lanes and a private tea ceremony hosted by a maiko-in-training.
Nara's deer and Todai-ji
The world's largest wooden temple and 1,200 bowing deer, on a fully guided day trip.
Dotonbori food crawl
Takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu and a rooftop farewell dinner over the neon canal.

What our travellers are saying.
Real feedback from families, couples and honeymooners who travelled this exact package.
“Cherry blossom season with two kids under ten and it worked. The Disneyland add-on was the highlight for them; the bullet train for us. Vegetarian food was never an issue — someone had thought about every meal.”
“Travelled with my 68-year-old mother. The private-guide add-on was worth every rupee. Fushimi Inari at 6:30 a.m. was the single most beautiful moment of the trip.”
“We compared four agencies before booking. Tour Monkey was the only one who quoted the exact ryokan we wanted and got the room with the private onsen. Everything after that was easy.”
“Kaiseki dinner with three vegetarians in the family and the chef sent out a fully separate menu. Small things, done right.”
“The Gion tea ceremony and the Michelin sushi omakase were the two experiences I still talk about. Book both.”
