8 Nights Alpine Switzerland

This is the classic Swiss loop, planned by our specialists to sit comfortably at the intersection of scenery, ease and value. You open in Zurich for one night to shake off the flight, spend two lakeside nights in Lucerne with a Mount Pilatus excursion, ride the GoldenPass panoramic train to Interlaken for two nights and a full-day Jungfraujoch summit, and close with three nights in Zermatt with Matterhorn views from every window. Everything moves by train, on the Swiss Travel Pass — the country's single-ticket masterpiece.

The route was chosen for a reason. Most first-time Switzerland itineraries try to cover five or six regions in a week and end up rushing through all of them. Ours slows down to three: the lakes (Lucerne), the Bernese Oberland (Interlaken and Jungfrau) and the Valais (Zermatt and Matterhorn). Zurich exists to bookend the trip, not to be sightseen at length. What you gain is time — enough time to take the cable car up in the morning and still have the afternoon for a lakeside walk, enough time to catch a clear Matterhorn window, enough time for a long Alpine dinner without rushing to the next train.

This itinerary suits couples on a milestone trip, families with children old enough to enjoy cog railways and cable cars, honeymooners planning a soft-adventure Europe trip, and travellers who want to see marquee Switzerland without doing a whistle-stop tour. It works equally well as a summer trip (May–September, wildflowers and clear passes) and a winter one (December–February, snow-dressed villages and skiing add-ons).

The pace is intentional. Train transfers between cities are 45 minutes to 2 hours — never a full-day slog. Every check-in is by 3 p.m., every check-out is a leisurely 11 a.m., and we build in luggage forwarding via SBB so you never lug a suitcase up a mountain. Each city gets one big scheduled excursion (Mount Pilatus in Lucerne, Jungfraujoch from Interlaken, Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise from Zermatt) and the rest is deliberately unstructured.

The luxury level sits at the top of the four-star band with room to upgrade to five-star. The signature tier includes Hotel Schweizerhof in Lucerne, Victoria-Jungfrau Grand in Interlaken and Mont Cervin Palace in Zermatt — three of the most storied hotels in the country. The comfort tier substitutes equivalent 4-star properties and reduces the package by ~₹40,000 per person; the luxury tier upgrades to Baur au Lac, Bürgenstock and The Omnia and adds ~₹1,20,000 per person.

For honeymooners, the trip has a soft-adventure spine designed around scenic drama. Zermatt is the emotional heart — a car-free village at 1,600 metres, with the Matterhorn framing every window. Room categories at Mont Cervin Palace, The Omnia and Grand Hotel Zermatterhof can be upgraded to Matterhorn-view suites with private terraces on request, and we can arrange a private helicopter flight around the Matterhorn as an unforgettable milestone add-on.

For families, the pacing works well from age six upwards. Children love cog railways, cable cars, ice palaces at Jungfraujoch, the paddle steamers on Lake Lucerne, and (in season) a snow day at Grindelwald First. Every hotel offers family rooms or interconnecting configurations, and vegetarian, Jain, no-onion-no-garlic requirements are pre-briefed with the chef at each property before you arrive.

Food across the route is quietly excellent. Zurich delivers strong Indian and vegetarian restaurants (Rasoi by Vineet at Baur au Lac, Chennai Kitchen), Lucerne and Interlaken run reliable Indian kitchens for evening meals, and Zermatt has emerged as a genuine gastronomy destination with restaurants like Chez Vrony, After Seven, Findlerhof and Zum See. Swiss chocolate at Cailler, a fondue evening in Gruyères and raclette in Zermatt round out the classics.

Trains are the reason Switzerland travels so gracefully. Every leg on this trip is on a panoramic route: Zurich → Lucerne is a scenic lakeside run, Lucerne → Interlaken is the two-hour GoldenPass Line, and Interlaken → Zermatt is a Rhône-valley journey through Visp. Seat reservations for panoramic trains, including the optional Glacier Express upgrade, are pre-booked as part of the package.
