Why visit Switzerland.
Few countries reward slow travel like Switzerland. In the space of a single week you can wake in a lakeside chalet in Lucerne, cross the country by panoramic train, climb into a glacier tunnel at Jungfraujoch and finish the trip on the terraces of Zermatt with the Matterhorn framing every window. The scale is small — most travellers cover four regions in ten days — but the density of scenery is unlike anywhere else in Europe.
What sets Switzerland apart is how effortlessly it moves. The Swiss Travel Pass connects almost every train, bus and lake ferry in the country on a single ticket. Trains run to the minute; luggage forwarding services carry your bags between hotels; and the panoramic routes — the GoldenPass, the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express — are themselves the sightseeing. You are not travelling between destinations; the journey is the destination.
Switzerland suits a wider range of travellers than most first-timers expect. Honeymooners lean into Zermatt and the Bernese Oberland — Matterhorn suites, private Alpine dinners and cog-railway rides above the clouds. Families do exceptionally well on the classic Lucerne–Interlaken–Zermatt route: mountain excursions that work for children, chocolate factory visits, and hotel groups (Victoria-Jungfrau, Bürgenstock, Mont Cervin Palace) that have hosted Indian families for decades. Luxury travellers will find the country's five-star scene quietly world-class — Baur au Lac in Zurich, The Chedi Andermatt, Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, Le Bijou apartments in Lucerne — and adventure travellers can build the trip around hiking, paragliding at Interlaken, glacier skiing above Zermatt, or a Via Ferrata day at Mürren.
Food is better than most Indian travellers expect. Zermatt and Verbier have become genuine gastronomy destinations, with restaurants like Chez Vrony and After Seven earning strong Michelin recognition. Every major city has a well-run Indian and vegetarian scene — Rasoi by Vineet in Geneva, Bindella and Trois Rois in Basel, an outpost of Chennai Kitchen in Zurich — and every hotel breakfast now offers vegetarian, Jain and Indian-friendly options as standard. Swiss chocolate, cheese fondue and raclette remain the classics; a factory visit to Cailler or Lindt is worth a half-day if you are travelling with children.
Culturally, Switzerland rewards curiosity. The Kunsthaus in Zurich holds one of Europe's best Impressionist collections; the Chaplin's World museum above Lake Geneva is a quietly beautiful afternoon; the Olympic Museum in Lausanne is one of the world's best sports museums. Bern's medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and its Zytglogge clock tower has been telling time for six centuries. Even a rainy day in Switzerland has more to offer than most travellers plan for.
The country runs on trains, but distances are short. Zurich to Lucerne is 45 minutes. Lucerne to Interlaken via the GoldenPass is two hours. Interlaken to Zermatt via the Glacier Express is a scenic four hours. Nowhere on a classic Swiss itinerary is more than half a day away from anywhere else — which is why the country works so well for travellers who want variety without a punishing pace.
Weather works in your favour year-round. May through September is the summer season — long days, wildflower meadows above the treeline, Jungfraujoch and Matterhorn at their clearest. December through February is peak ski season, with Zermatt, St. Moritz and Verbier delivering some of Europe's best pistes and every hotel dressed up for the holidays. October and November are quieter shoulder months; March and April can be tricky (mud season below and thinning snow above) unless you are chasing spring skiing.
Practically, Switzerland is easy for Indian passport holders. The Schengen visa (issued via VFS in India) covers Switzerland and every neighbouring country you might add on. Flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru run daily to Zurich or Geneva, either direct (Swiss International Air Lines) or one-stop via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul. Swiss francs remain the local currency; ATMs are everywhere and every card is accepted. English is universally spoken in the tourist regions.
Switzerland also pairs beautifully with the rest of Europe. Two nights in Paris on the way in, three nights in the Italian Lakes on the way out, or a longer loop through the Bernese Oberland, Interlaken, Lucerne, Zermatt and St. Moritz all sit within a single Swiss Travel Pass. The country works equally well as a stand-alone eight-night trip, or as the anchor of a two- or three-country European itinerary.
A well-planned Switzerland trip is not about doing more. It is about ordering the regions in the right sequence, staying in hotels that face the right mountains, timing the panoramic trains around the clearest afternoons, and building in enough downtime for lakeside walks and long dinners. That is what our specialists build for — and it is why our Switzerland travellers keep coming back with a new region in mind for the next trip.
Moments only the Alps can offer.
